This time of year, when it is still cold outdoors, I start to plan on the upcoming year in the garden.
But, before I start ordering seeds and plants, I take a little time to reflect on my garden last year and ask myself the following questions:
What plants bloomed best?
I loved how well my pink trumpet vine (Podranea ricasoliana), Globe Mallow (Sphaeralcea ambigua ‘Louis Hamilton’) and Firecracker Penstemon (Penstemon eatoni) bloomed last year. I didn’t have to fertilize them or prune them too often, so I will be sure to keep them in my garden for this next year.
What vegetables produced well last year?
I had great luck growing peppers, tomatoes, bush beans, garlic and cucumbers in my garden. I will definitely be doing these again.
What gardening projects were successful in your garden?
Last year, I planted a container herb garden full of my favorite herbs – green basil, purple basil, oregano, thyme and sage. It did very well, so I will be planting another one this spring.
Did you have any problems in the garden?
Last year, I had problems with leaf rollers attacking my yellow bells shrubs for the first time in 15 years. I will be sure to keep an eye on them this year – hopefully they won’t be back.
What new projects will you try this year?
I am going to be growing potatoes in a container. In addition, I purchased seeds for corn that is supposed to do well when grown in a container, so I am looking forward to trying them out.
How about you?
What did well in your garden last year and what didn’t?
Will you plant anything new?
