Working as a horticulturist, I often get the opportunity to visit many gardens.
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to visit a beautiful garden that was located within an old Phoenix Date Palm grove.

The homeowner created a beautiful back garden retreat.
Although, the colorful Gold Lantana definitely caught me eye – what really caught my attention was in the back of her garden.

A bare fence or wall can be quite boring, so the homeowner created a ‘plant shelf’ using masonry bricks and wooden planks.
She added colorful blue pots filled with Golden Barrel Cactus among other favorite plants.
I absolutely loved the ingenuity she showed by using items she already had lying around to cover this bare space.
Just think of the possibilities….
- You can fill the containers with herbs during the warm season.
- Plant vegetables like lettuce, spinach, tomatoes in summer OR cabbage in the cool-season.
- Of course, colorful annuals would look fabulous too.
- Even when empty, the colorful pots will add color and interest against the fence.

So how about you?
What do you do to cover up a boring fence?

To spruce up my boring fence, I plant several Scarlet Runner Bean plants beside it. I run strings from the ground up to the top for the vines to scale. They grow and fill in nicely, with pretty red flowers. At the end of the season I gather the bean pods for next years crop. It’s much prettier than a weathered wood fence to look at all season…
