Why You Need Yellow In Your Garden

by Noelle on July 31, 2012

Do you like the color yellow?

I must admit that it isn’t my favorite color.  BUT, when planted in a garden – I love it!

Adding yellow flowering plants to your garden will actually make your other plants look better.

The reason for this is that the color yellow contrasts nicely with just about every other color.  This helps these other colors to visually ‘pop’ in the garden.

I have some favorite yellow plants…

Rudbeckia hirta

I love the dark brown centers of Rudbeckia, don’t you?

Achillea yarrow ‘Moonshine’

Achillea not only has beautiful yellow flowers, but gray foliage, which also provides a great contrast in the garden.

Goldenrod

One of the things I love about Goldenrod, is the unique plume shape of the flowers.

Yellow Daisy (Euryops pectinatus)

Yellow Daisy has pretty, dark green foliage AND is deer resistant.

Coreopsis grandiflors

Coreopsis looks great in a perennial border or in a container.

Damianita (Chrysactinia mexicana)

Damianita is one of my favorites for the landscape.  Not only does it make a great ground cover, but it is low-maintenance.

‘Graham Thomas’ English Rose

Of course, it is hard to beat a beautiful and fragrant yellow rose.

I hope some of these yellow, flowering plants inspire you to plant some in your garden.  I particularly like to pair yellows with purples, blues and reds.

Do you have a favorite yellow plant?  Please share it with us!
