Too Hot to Garden? – Garden at Night!

by Noelle on July 13, 2012

I love to spend time out in my garden in spring and fall.  But not always in the summer months.  Excessive heat can literally suck out any desire for me to go outside, not to mention doing anything in the garden.

On an excessively hot summer’s day, I often can’t wait for the sun to set.  Then I begin to see people venturing outdoors – kids come out to play, neighbors come out and sit on their porches and people start walking their dogs.

But for me, I find myself heading out into my garden at night.

Pruning vines.

The temperatures may still be hot, but once the sun has gone down – it is much easier to spend time outside.  It is also much easier to get my kids to come out and help me ;-)

If needed, I bring out extra light so I can see what I am doing.  (Someday, I want to drape my garden fences with white holiday lights, not just for decoration, but also for additional illumination for the garden).

When gardening at night, I am sometimes visited by a little ‘friend’ or two who are curious about what I am doing.

So the next time your garden needs some attention and the temperatures are too hot – try gardening at night!

I’m guessing you don’t have mosquitoes? Or at least not mosquitoes as big as small birds? :)

We do have some mosquitoes, but not too many ;-)

Oh Yes.. but when it’s still 103 at 9:30 I still can’t get the desire up to go outside much. The last couple of nights we actually had …what is again?.. Oh Yes, Rain ! That made it a lot nicer outside, but also difficult to do much work in the garden. Except for some of my peppers and the ongoing lawn and floral maintenance, my garden is pretty much on summer vacation until September.
