Birds & Blooms’ Friday Fun Photo for June 8, 2012: Mourning Doves by Julie Barnard. “This year I put up a hanging basket of coleus,” Julie writes. “Within a day, a mourning dove had built a nest, smashing down all my new plants! Fortunately, they recovered. The basket hangs just below eye level, so were were able to watch the eggs hatch and young grow, surrounded by the security of the coleus.”
We want to know–what’s the cleverest caption you can “hatch up” for this adorable trio!

Mommm—-I think we’re warm enough now!!!!
We have a dove nesting in our Geranium Ivy hanging pot on our side porch. We’ve been having a problem with pigeons lately, although we live in the Suburbs of the city. My hub wanted to remove the plant, but I told him it was mean since she already laid her eggs. I enjoy peaking out of my window to watch her. He/she is very aware of their surroundings and knows when I’m watching. I’ve read that the male guards the nest from early morning to late afternoon, then the female takes over from night to early morning. They are adorable, but my husband doesn’t want to encourage their return, so after the babies leave the nest, he intends to remove the pot. It’s not that we don’t like birds, in fact, we enjoy hearing and watching cardinals, finches, jays and even the more common birds. But our neighbors have been overfeeding the birds for many years, including throwing out bread and other scraps of food. The result is that we now have at least 30 pigeons hanging around. They’re very messy and I’m concerned about the droppings, since they can transmit diseases. Birds are beautiful creatures and I wouldn’t think of harming any of them, but something has to be done about deterring the increase of pigeons in our area. Food is the reason they are congregating in our yard, but it’s our neighbors who are causing a serious problem. There’s nothing wrong with having a feeder or two, but these neighbors have 6 feeders in a small backyard, compounded by throwing scraps of food and huge chunks of bread out every morning and after dinner – every day. The birds find it difficult to carry the huge pieces of bread and food, so it’s usually ends up falling on my porch and back yard. Now on top of all the droppings, I also have an ant problem due to the bread scraps dropped on my porch.
Mush, Birdies, MUSH!!
Look, sis, we’re a two-dove open sleigh!
“I bought these Slippers at Wally-World..aren’t they the cutest”!
