Colorful Flower Container Ideas

by Noelle on May 29, 2012

Earlier this month, I was fortunate enough to travel through several states throughout the Northeast while on a road trip.  I spent time in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

I enjoyed seeing the beautiful, spring gardens and many different containers filled with colorful flowers combinations.

Here are some of my favorites that you may want to try:

Collection of flower containers from an Amish flea market in upstate New York.

White Lobelia and Bright Coral Impatiens in front of country store in Volant, New York.

These Pansies have ruffled edges. I believe they are a variety known as 'Frizzle Sizzle'. This container was on the main street of Skaneateles, which is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

Containers of Red and White Impatiens in Skaneateles, New York.

Hanging basket with Lobelia and Ornamental Grass.

Blue hydrangea, English Ivy with Yellow Violas in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Daffodils inside a container in Niagara Falls.

Blue Lobelia, Orange Geranium, Light Green Sweet Potato Vine container in western Pennsylvania.

White, Yellow and Pink Wave Petunias make a colorful hanging basket in Volant, New York.

Purple Cineraria with Light Green Sweet Potato Vine in Skaneateles, New York.

Bicycle planter with Pink Wave Petunias and Variegated Vinca in Burlington, Vermont.

Have you planted your spring containers yet?  Need ideas?  Try one of these beautiful combinations.

I have a bougainvillea (sp) that have not bloomed for the last 2 years. The plant is pretty and green, but no blooms. Any suggestion? What fertilizer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Bougainvillea blooms on “new” wood, so the way to encourage more blossoms is to cut it back severely. This will encourage growth of new canes, which will bear next year’s flowers. Good luck.

I always take in my bougainvillea since it is not cold tolerant? Is that true for zone 5/6?

Hello Hilde,

Yes. Bougainvillea is not cold tolerant and should be brought inside if your zone 5/6 garden.

I do love Bougainvillea. They are so colorful.
