Do you believe in fairies?
When I was a child, I imagined that fairies lived in our garden.
Did you know that you can create your own miniature fairy garden? This is very fun project whether you are a kid or a ‘kid at heart’.
Container Fairy Gardens
To get started, you will need the following:
- Container with holes for drainage
- Potting mix (not potting soil)
- Pea gravel, colored pebbles and/or a small river rock or two
- Small furniture, animals, etc for decorating your garden
- Plants
Once you have added your potting mix to your container, then it is time to add your plants. Select plants that have interesting shapes, color and texture. Avoid overcrowding your fairy garden with too many plants – you want to be able to see the other elements of the garden.
Avoid using plants that will grow too large. Good plants to try are Fiber Optic Grass, Thyme, Violas, Moss, ‘Living’ Rocks and Lobelia.
Use your imagination when choosing plants – for example: a small Rosemary plant can be pruned up to look like a spiky tree.
After adding your plants, it’s time to add any figurines and decorations to the garden -’fairy’ furniture can be made out of sticks or large pieces of bark. Again, use your imagination.
Cover the soil with pebbles and/or pea gravel to finish your garden and water well.
Who knows? Your garden may soon be visited with ‘real’ fairies

Hi Noelle, They ARE such fun to create! I have been a true fan of fairy gardens for many years, since the mid 1990′s.
Not only do I have some fairy gardens inside and out- I also have quite a collection of fairy figurines, as well!! Yes, I would
consider myself a big ‘kid at heart’ !
Nice photos. Here are some container-based fairy gardens I made that might give people some ideas about other ways you can design things. The sky’s the limit, really, and these things are a blast!

Love your pictures Bill. I’m recently into fairy gardening, and love it. Having a hard time finding large SHALLOW pots. I did get some good ideas from your pictures. Thanks again, Penny
