Cardboard Gardening Container: Twig Project

by Stacy (Editors' Blog) on March 14, 2012

This cardboard container uses a cardboard box as a base with twigs and elastic bands.

In our recent article about cardboard gardening, we encourage you to use cardboard throughout your garden. One of our favorite ways to do this is with containers! Here’s one way to transform an ordinary cardboard box into a gorgeous container.

Twig Container

Materials

  • Twigs
  • Elastic hair bands
  • Saw
  • Cardboard box

 How-to

  1. Find a cardboard box and push the top flaps down into the box for extra reinforcement. Add a few drainage holes in the bottom.
  2. Look around for similar sized twigs in your area. Then for a uniform look, use a saw to make them all the same size.
  3. Place elastic hair bands around the box. Then line up your sticks under the bands, one side at a time. Now all you need is soil and plants!

Remember this is cardboard—don’t expect it to last more than a season or two at the most. But we think it’s a fun, quick and cheap way to create a container without spending a lot of money! Do you have a clever idea for using cardboard in the garden? We want to hear it! Send us your idea and photo using our Submit Your Story form. If we use it in the magazine, we’ll send you $50!

I love this cardboard container. During pruning season it’s going to be easy to save twigs. While pruning a tree that hangs over our garage, we used a saw to cut 3-4″ pieces of one large limb. To my surprise the large limb was two limbs growing together & in the middle where they met there were marks that looked like a face (two marks for eyes & one larger mark that looked like a smile). I’m planning on incorporating these pieces into a walk in my backyard.
I was able to incorporate a “volunteer” of sorts in one of my flower beds. The birds or the winds brought the seed of a palm tree years ago. I never really thought it would be a problem but it out grew its welcome taking over the flower bed . Finally it got too large & I cut it down to about 6ft. in height. Knowing that I couldn’t dig it up, I gave up. The top dried up & fell off but the rest gave up & I was able to dig out the inside, put in some soil & add spider plants & asparagus fern & it’s a great “potted plant”.
