Last weekend’s garden chores had me gloriously enjoying the beautiful fall weather. I got all my new bulbs planted (purchased at American Meadows):
- Red Emperor and Biltmore Gavota Tulips
- Double Poet Daffodils
- Tequila Sunrise Hyacinth
- Graceful Allium
What? You still haven’t purchased your bulbs? No fear. You can still find basic tulips, daffodils and crocus at your big box stores. Many of the online retailers are clearing out the last of their fall bulbs, so now is a good time to get great clearance prices. So what are you waiting for?
I also transferred my herbs to pots so I could bring them indoors with hopes of enjoying them in my kitchen all winter. I have an older, drafty home that isn’t conducive to keeping plants from the garden alive when the temps dip. But I put them in my sunniest window (east) and will help them with a bit of artificial light. Keep your fingers crossed that I’ll be enjoying my Italian kitchen garden well into winter! Do you overwinter any herbs?
I have yet to divide my perennials…those of us in Zones 3 and 4 probably only have a few weeks left to get bulbs in and perennials divided before a hard ground freeze. Those of you in Zone 5 probably have until early December, depending on your exact location.
What garden chores do you have left before old man winter blows his frigid wind? Do you have new bulbs you’re excited about? Tell me by leaving a comment below!

Yes, Paula, I am going outside in half an hour and plant the last six perennials—a yarrow, coneflower, two coral bells, a short phlox, and a couple other t hings….I am always after the end of season bargain and they are usually cheap enough to be worth trying…will add mulch around them and water and hope for the best. Winter comes hard around here too…and good snow cover will be a big help. Have a formed donated water feature to dig into the ground this weekend also….haven’t figured out how to ask any friends to help dig it though….it is about the size of a big jacuzzi bathtub. Keep us posted on your gardening successes and last minute finds….finding bargains are the most fun part of it all….
Oh – I agree Sue. Love those end-of-season bargains. Like you say, they are usually cheap enough to put in and hope for the best! lol
I’m on the hunt for perennial mums….
