Auh I had the pleasure of having one of these in my yard yesterday!
Do they eat insects?, because the one I had was pecking at the ground and I did not see it on my feeders

The insects that they were eating inthe ground were ants! I saw the same thing and when he left I went out to lokk and see what he was eating and there were ants all around and going in antholes! Just wish they would eat like all they other woodpeckers at the suet!

@Peggy – Flickers are the only Northeastern woodpecker that will eat on the ground. All woodpeckers eat insects.

I had one of these crash into my picture window! He was knocked out but after a bit I was able to release him. He stayed around for about a week.

A great picture! We have flickers that nest near our house and always eat the suet. One was peking near our bedroom window and I thought he had just been going after insects until a few daysw later when I went into the room and found him flying around. It took a little while but we finally got him safely out again. The screen was ruined. I guess he thought he had found himself a kng sized secluded nest.

A year ago we had a Northern flicker walking around on our sidewalk , the bird was eating the ants in the cracks of the sidewalk, could’nt resist taking pictures of it. The bird did’nt mind it at all, he was too busy. That was the first, we have seen one. They are a very pretty bird.
