Astounding Post-Hurricane Hummingbird Video

by Jill (Southeast) on September 2, 2011

The strong winds of Hurricane Irene were too much for even larger birds to handle, but tiny hummingbirds clearly didn’t stand a chance. They had no choice but to take shelter until the winds died down, but once the storm passed, they needed to feed again – desperately. This video from Virginia (posted by the Daily Jeffersonian) shows literally swarms of hummingbirds getting their first meal after the hurricane.

The only time I ever saw this many hummers at one time was in Mena, AR several summers ago when a friend and I spent a weekend up there. They had feeders lined around the edge of the lodge side by side and the hummers were as thick as flies around them. Had never seen that many at the same time again.
