(Another) Butterfly Garden

by Danielle (Editors' Blog) on June 27, 2011

A couple months ago I researched a variety of charming Bed & Breakfast retreats that incorporated gardening into the guest’s stay. Let me tell you–these places are incredible, and if I had the time and money, I’d visit each and every one of them.

I chose to highlight a specific Bed & Breakfast that really caught my eye: the Brewster Inn in Dexter, Maine.

To my surprise, I received a phone call recently from the innkeeper, Mark Stephens, to tell me he had plans to incorporate a butterfly garden into his property, like the one he’d seen in the magazine. In fact, our own editor, Stacy made her own butterfly garden, too. I was thrilled! And, a few short weeks later, his dream came true:

Newly planted butterfly garden at the Brewster Inn, Dexter, Maine. For more pictures and video, click on this photo to visit the Brewster Inn Facebook page (facebook.com/brewsterinnfans).

What creative gardens do you have in your backyard? Are you jumping on the butterfly garden-bandwagon, too? We’d love to hear about them in the comment section below! Or better yet, if you have photos to share, submit them here.

Most of my flower beds have turned into butterfly gardens. My focus over the last couple of years has been monarchs so I have lots of milkweed. I raised over 250 monarchs last year and hoping for 500 this year! In addition to milkweed, I have butterfly bushes, cone flowers, zinnias, yarrow, sedum, joepye weed, dill, fennell, snapdragons and so much more!! Butterflies make the hot days of July & august worth going outside!!

Sounds like you’re nice and busy with the butterflies in your backyard, Chris! It’d be wonderful to have so many to watch. Good luck on reaching 500. :)

Thanks for another great write up Danielle. It’s changing every day here now… more things going on each time I look. So much so that we have been asked by a freelance photographer if she can come out soon and photograph our gardens for the http://tclf.org/ The Cultural Landscape Foundation.. very exciting with us being in a small town in Maine.

And thank you for the exposure as I have another 11 fans in 24 hours on our well populated fan page over at Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/brewsterinnfans

Every year I look forward to seeing my butterflies. I am in the last stages of lung diease. And I am home bound. My husband planted a butterfly bush up against our front porch, so that I wouldn’t have to go down stairs and I could come and sit on porch and enjoy these amazing butterflies. I have summited serval pics of them, for I am so proud of them. I just cherish every moment that I can sit and watch such splendor.
